Welcome to Cedar House
Cedar House is a former Vicarage and was built in the Georgian and early Victorian periods. The garden and arboretum extend to 6 acres. David and Sandra Burbidge acquired Cedar House in 1978 and have continually enhanced the house & grounds.
There are a number of wonderful mature trees from the early Vicarage days including the magnificent Cedar of Lebanon after which the house is named. There is also an extraordinary vintage Sycamore which our grandson calls the Magic Tree as he finds sweets hidden in its crevices (thanks to his grandmother), both of which are listed as Notable by the Woodland Trust. Many unusual trees have been added throughout the grounds, including a magnificent collection of Acer Palmatum. There is an emphasis on exceptional autumn colour to complement the spring and summer colour in the flower beds. Valuable advice on tree planting has been given by Robert Vernon of Bluebell Nurseries.
David Burbidge has created five new garden areas in the last few years:
- The Woodland Garden with a number of rare trees.
- The Garden of Reflection based around the Quiver sculpture by David Harber.
- The Peacock Garden full of fabulous Rhododendrons, Azaleas and other herbaceous plants.
- The Stumpery has been created using stumps from trees felled in the arboretum.
- The most recent addition in 2023 is the Water Meadow Garden, designed with the help of James Fotheringhame. This is based on a large wildlife pond and is surrounded by areas of grasses and perennial planting.
The gardens and lawns are watered by automatic sprinklers supplied from the 42 metre bore hole. This ensures that the gardens are at their best even in periods of drought. There are extensive paths throughout the woodland areas and all around the grounds.
